Puccini’s Tosca returns to the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma 125 years after its world premiere

Exactly 125 years after its world premiere on January 14, 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi, the most Roman of Giacomo Puccini’s masterpieces returns to the very stage of its debut. Michele Mariotti takes the podium of the Rome Opera to conduct Tosca in the scenic version of the original premiere, reconstructed by the Capitoline foundation in collaboration with the Ricordi Historical Archive in 2015 from the original sketches, and since then regularly staged at the Costanzi under the direction of Alessandro Talevi. In the title role is Saioa Hernández, with Gregory Kunde as Cavaradossi and Gevorg Hakobyan as Baron Scarpia. The premiere on January 14 is broadcast live on Rai Radio3. The cast is completed by Luciano Leoni as Cesare Angelotti, Domenico Colaianni as the Sacristan, and Saverio Fiore as Spoletta. The original sets and costumes of Tosca, designed by Adolf Hohenstein, have been reconstructed respectively by Carlo Savi and Anna Biagiotti. Lighting by Vinicio Cheli. The Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, with Ciro Visco as Chorus Master, performs, joined by the Children’s Choir of the Costanzi.

On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Tosca’s world premiere, a commemorative plaque marking the birth of Puccini’s masterpiece will be unveiled in the theatre on opening night.
