Following its celebrated premiere at the Salzburg Festival in 2017 and a first revision in 2022, Michele Mariotti conducts a newly reimagined production of Verdi’s Aida, staged by Shirin Neshat, at the Opéra National de Paris, running from 24 September to 4 November 2025.
At the heart of Aida lies an impossible choice: the love for an enemy general against the love of one’s homeland. Caught between these forces is Aida, an Ethiopian princess enslaved in Egypt, herself entangled in a fierce rivalry with Amneris, the Pharaoh’s daughter who loves the same man, Radamès. Yet it is the proud Amneris who ultimately begs the priests to spare Radamès, after he unwittingly betrays a military secret. First performed in Cairo in 1871, Verdi masterfully weaves grand spectacle, including the iconic triumphal march, with moments of profound intimacy such as Celeste Aida.
